When I Retreat Into Silence

It’s not you; it’s me. What may seem like silence to you, is usually me lost in deep reflective thoughts. It is me embracing the silence to calm the busyness in my brain. The other days, it’s a need for silence when the world has been too loud for too long. No matter the reason, I often need to retreat into that stillness to gasp for breath and recover before the world forces me to drown. There are times where I just get overwhelmed and am deep in the weight of feelings that need to be unraveled from my skin. So when you see I haven’t opened a message or when you wonder if I’ve dropped off the face of the Earth, just know I am in a mode of recovery.

Silence doesn’t always have to be a bad thing. It’s okay for people to take the space they need to breathe. You don’t owe anyone your time and connection, especially when you have nothing left to give and need to recover. And for some of us, we need isolation in order to be social and connect again. We need silence to uncover our own voice when it feels lost in the abyss of endless noise.

Most of us will tell you, I just need to detach right now. We’ll let you know we’re going inwards for a mental hibernation in order to find ourselves and come back to the realities we face daily. And if you message to check in, just know we appreciate the concern, the care, the connection, and will get back to you when able to navigate the energy of others again.

So when I go silent, remember, I am lost in a mental labyrinth in search of my way out, not only to get back to me, but to get back to you too. It’s a journey of self to recharge and navigate my way forward so I can break free of feeling lost, and rejoin the world when I make it free again.

It truly isn’t you; it’s just me refinding me.

When I went to write this article it came out as a poem first. I’ve included the poem after the picture. Due to formatting of the lines, it could only be attached as an image to keep it’s integrity.
